Apartment Therapy Tour

Best Practice has completed a much-needed refresh for an aging floating home on Lake Union. The home, a mish mash of several previous floating cabins, had been cobbled together over the years into a residence along the East side of the lake. With views towards downtown and the Space Needle, this prime spot received a complete interior renovation, upgrading structure, floatation, and systems. The lower-level bathroom was relocated to make room for a slightly larger kitchen and interior laundry room (laundry was previously in an exterior storage room). The new kitchen is lively and bright with a mix of white oak and pistachio painted cabinets. It makes use of a lower ceiling area with a water view along the channel and incorporates a built-in breakfast nook and coffee bar. The living room was expanded to include a former office space, creating a cozy area for relaxing and a soaring open space filled with natural light. Storage areas were maximized, including a new interior storage room and reconfiguring an existing exterior storage room to be more functional.

Upstairs, the open primary bedroom was outfitted with a new tile-clad bathroom and steam shower. In a former closet, a wet bar with sink and fridge were included in the design, allowing for easy entertaining on the renovated roof deck. Accessed through a hinged window, the deck offers views of South Lake Union, the sea planes, and the Space Needle beyond.

Storage was cleverly tucked into the architectural elements, including this shoe cubby inside the tiled bench at the entryway.
