A contemporary addition was integrated into a 100-year-old house in Madrona that expanded the family room, provided a much needed remodel to the kitchen, living, and dining rooms, and added a series of new multi-level decks with spectacular mega-views of Lake Washington.

The expansive kitchen is predominantly rendered in neutral, white warm tones to provide a crisp, clean palette to make a feature of the luxurious island and bar constructed from unique ‘sinker cypress’ reclaimed from the family’s heritage home.

To cleverly balance the needs of privacy with providing views and natural light, the walk-in shower is a composition of day-lit portals, tile and color blocks creating a sensory constellation.

The clients wanted to extend their exterior decks to extend the living spaces and better access the expansive lake view, but due to site constraints and steep slope, additional foundation for the decks were unfeasible. Collaborating with the structural engineer, James Harriott, an ingenious and elegant solution was devised to avoid added foundation by cantilevering the deck cleverly using the guardrail as a steel truss.

Naturally, we had to hang a swing from it, too!

A new detached garage with viewing deck, revitalized landscaping, and custom kid’s playhouse completely transformed the steeply sloped rear yard.
