Best Practice teamed with Urbanadd to design a local tasting room for The Estates Group, purveyors of many wines in the Pacific Northwest. Located in Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square neighborhood under a leafy canopy of trees on Occidental Square, the Estates Wine Room makes its home in a century old warehouse building on a cobblestoned pedestrian street. A series of white oak fins march through the space at an angle, screening the main public areas from the back-of-house and providing an armature for an immersive image experience. The design team was tasked with the challenge of creating a tasting room that showcases two vineyards; Double Canyon from the arid region of Eastern Washington and Archery Summit, from the lush and green Willamette River Valley in Oregon. The lenticular wall became the device that allows both places to exist in the same space, with two separate images with a mirror strip in between, one visible when walking to the back, the other from back to front.

Iconic images of each vineyard were selected, and then split into strips and laminated onto the white oak fins – one vineyard’s image on one side and the other vineyard on the opposing side. As you move along the fin wall, this technique allows one image to morph into the other image depending on your viewing angle. A mirrored edge was added to each fin to provide reflected glimpses of visitors (and yourself!), and the brick wall beyond. In order to see each image as a whole, you must stand back and view the entire composition from one end (or the other). This technique encourages people to move throughout the space freely and to experience each vineyard simultaneously.
