‘Thresholds’ is a temporary installation that inhabits the space between one event and another. At a conference focused on the mostly digital aspects of Interaction Design, these suspended paper thresholds provide a refreshing analog experience of texture, sound and color as the conference goers move between lectures and events. Shoji screen paper was cut and embellished with colored vinyl and tape to create the colorful landscapes, and then arranged on a temporary structure that held them up off the ground. As people walk through, under and around the installations, light and color change, rustling paper provides soft sounds.

The design team was adamant about creating as little waste as possible with these temporary constructions, and took pains to ensure that most of the material was rented, reused or recycled. The rented structure was returned to the rental company, and the majority of the paper was donated to an elementary school or recycled after the vinyl/tape portions were removed.
