Lead by partners Ian Butcher, Sarah Smith, and Kip Katich, Best Practice has been actively pursuing challenging and creative work in and around the Pacific Northwest since 2011. We relish in a diverse and varied roster of projects spanning commercial and residential.

Approach

We champion good ideas, not who is responsible for having them, and we foster an attitude in the studio that is not centered on a single design vision.

Rather than being beholden to one design aesthetic or process, we encourage our designers to evolve and develop ideas based on the project characteristics, sustainability or weird program adjacencies.

We invite and lean into eccentric conditions and treat these constraints as opportunities for inventive problem solving.

Culture

Ian likes to say that Best Practice is serious about our work, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously.

We have fun inside and outside the office: we listen to music, do silly drawings, have plants, do a workout everyday at 3pm and above all, understand that while we want people to share their creativity with us at work, true creatives have curious and full lives, with goals, dreams and projects that take place outside of our office setting.

We strive to provide a good balance between working and living, and to have the BEST SWAG of all architecture firms.

Collaboration

Best Practice loves to engage with the larger group of makers and thinkers in our work!

We are fortunate to have deep connections in our local design community and have close working relationships with many local designers, fabricators, artists and engineers. These talented individuals lend their craft and insight and help provide a measure of unique, locally crafted, feeling in our work.

Our strength lies in our ability to creatively collaborate – with each other, our fabricators and our clients to provide innovative solutions that explore the precarious balance between function, content and beauty.

Social Justice

We are proud to announce that Best Practice has achieved a Just label. Created by the @living_future, the JUST program is a voluntary disclosure tool for organizations to elevate internal discussions, policies, and procedures and create a common language and measurement framework for social justice issues. Just is a call to action, and Best Practice is committed to being a more transparent, equitable, and socially just organization. We have more work to do, but are happy to share our progress at our Living Future page.

Team

We are a close-knit group of talented individuals who are passionate about our work and the impact it has in the outside world. Our team brings creativity, curiosity, enthusiasm and sometimes their dogs to work every day. We are proud to boast that more than half our staff is comprised of talented women, LGBTQ and minority architects & designers. Check out the Contact information if you are interested in joining our team.
