Constructed in the late 70s, this single family home had original details that begged to be preserved and some newer additions that felt dated and incongruous to the spirit of the home. The owners loved the wood ceilings and soaring spaces, but had a growing family with modern needs. Enter Best Practice. Through clever spatial interventions – including enclosing the rear porch and opening the main floor kitchen to the living space with a custom shelving surround, the home now feels warm, bright and highly functional while paying homage to the era details that the homeowners first fell in love with.

The kitchen was enlarged and opened to the dining space and living room. A built in banquette adjacent to the kitchen allows for easy gathering and preserves a walkway to the new mudroom. See the  images below that show the original configuration of these spaces.

Enclosing the original rear covered porch created a new mudroom with a custom storage bench and patterned tile floor.
